Video Cards and Related Technologies

How does a video card work?

A video card basically converts the computers digital signals coming from the processor into a signal that the monitor is able to interpret. Hence, its basic function is to convert data. The main point of difference between an entry level video card and a state-of-the art one is that the latters conversion speed is much better.

The Chips

The chip is the heart of the video card. It is where all the processing is done. It also makes 3D acceleration possible. The chip is to the video card, what the processor is to the computer. Of the two major chip manufacturers, ATI and NVIDIA, the former is well known for high quality and great technology.

Pipes

The information must travel through tunnels called pipes, before it can be converted. On one end it starts as raw data and ends up at the opposite end in a format that is compatible with the monitor. On its way, the data undergoes the conversion process. The greater the number of pipes, the more data that can be converted simultaneously.

The amount of data that a pipe can hold is called its Memory Interface. A pipe with a 128 bit interface can process more data than one with a 64 bit interface.

Memory

The memory is used to store temporary or transient information. Video information, being very data heavy, needs more memory. The two main types of memory are SDRAM and DDR RAM. DDR is superior as it can transmit information faster.

ATI Technology

An ATI card will offer many technologies that will significantly enhance your video experience. ATIs cards are fully compatible with all the latest 3D technologies and do not rely on your computers CPU to process information, as do some of the entry-level cards.

SmartShader

This technology will unleash a new generation of visual effects on your computer. Realistic graphics with breathtaking 3D effects are possible with SmartShader. DVD movies can be viewed to better effect with it too.

SmartVision

SmartVision has the effect of removing jagged edges, improving the image, bringing its finer details to light.

Fullstream

This is the latest technology in video processing, which is particularly for the Internet and video playback processing. It greatly improves the quality and performance of streaming video.

For The Love of Chocolate

Who would have dreamed that using chocolate as a skin moisturizer could ever be popular? Chocolate used to be called junk food. As a matter of fact, we used to blame chocolate for a whole host of facial epidermal problems, the best known of course, being acne.

But how quickly things change! Chocolate treatments can be found in boutiques in almost every corner of the globe. Scientific reports now consider dark chocolate to be a health food because of its powerful anti-oxidant properties, and something called flavanols, which among other things are said to offer extraordinary cardiovascular protection.

Cosmetics manufacturers are now adding chocolate as an ingredient into their skin care products formulas. The chocolate has extraordinary skin softening and moisturizing properties. Chocolate skin treatments have become the latest rage. Chocolate is also used to smooth out wrinkles due to its anti-oxidant high moisture content, thanks in large part to the wonders of cocoa butter.

Most chocolate treatments contain cocoa butter, but it is also used extensively in the formulation of many beauty products.

The anti-oxidant properties in cocoa are said to also prevent free radicals from damaging the skins elastin and collagen, which aids in the prevention of wrinkles.

Researchers and doctors have found that the anti-oxidant properties in cocoa is comparable to green tea. Dark chocolate, in particular, has a very high anti-oxidant content. Chocolate is considered dark if it has 35% percent cocoa or more.

What makes a chocolate skin moisturizer? The top 3 ingredients listed on the label will be the most important. Cocoa should be one of those top three ingredients.

However, for cocoa to be effective as an anti-oxidant, it would need to be absorbed and penetrate the dermis which is the lower layer of skin. Many doctors think that cocoa molecules are too big and some doubt that it can penetrate that far.

In spite of all the excitement and hype, further study is still being done. But, while all the benefits of chocolate skin treatments are still unclear, why not enjoy the forbidden fruit factor of smothering yourself in the luxury of wonderful dark chocolate?
